Baldur's Gate 3 Refectory Locked Door

Baldur’s Gate 3 Refectory Locked Door: How to Open Entrance in Dank Crypt

The Baldur’s Gate 3 Refectory location has a locked door that is impossible to lockpick. If you managed to open the door to the Dank Crypt, you likely approached this door from a room in the Refectory. However, there is seemingly no mechanism in the room, like a button or special switch to open it. And exploring the rest of the Dank Crypt doesn’t seem to yield any other clues either. Here’s how to unlock this locked door in the Refectory in BG3.

How to open Baldur’s Gate 3 Refectory door

To open the Baldur’s Gate 3 Refectory door, you need to unlock it by entering the Chapel and finding the switch that is next to the giant statue.

If you’ve found this door from the Dank Crypt, there’s no way to open it from your side. You basically have to go all the way around. You can do this by walking up the path from the coastline away from the entrance to this mini-dungeon or finding a path upwards in the crypt by using a ladder that places you very close to the Chapel entrance.

You’ll need to deal with some bandits who are looting the Chapel and the Refectory on the inside, but they are generally low level enough that they should be easy to fight regardless of the difficulty setting. (Here’s how to flee combat if you need it.) Once you’ve dealt with them, there will be a room with a giant statue surrounded by many piles of books and bookcases. We recommend looting all of the books (as they actually sell for quite a lot for the early game)

At any rate, there will be a switch behind the statue that you’ll find with a fairly low Perception check. Pressing this switch will open the locked door to the Dank Crypt.

In other words, the Chapel is meant to provide another way to enter the Dank Crypt if you weren’t able to clear the relatively high DC to lockpick the crypt’s entrance from the beach. This is just one of many instances where Baldur’s Gate 3 gives you different ways to approach a situation.
