Starfield Best Backgrounds: Which Background Should You Choose?

The Starfield best backgrounds are those that provide the best overall skills. Each background in character selection provides three entry-level skills, and given the limitations for a respec, it’s important to choose one that suits your playstyle. There are 21 backgrounds that you can pick from. Most of them will provide some extra dialogue options depending on the situation; for instance, choosing the Bouncer will give you some choices when talking about security issues. Here’s our selection for the best backgrounds you can pick in Starfield.

What are the Starfield best backgrounds?

The best backgrounds to choose during character selection are Bounty Hunter, Cyber Runner, Long Hauler, Soldier, and [FILE NOT FOUND].

All five of these backgrounds provide skills that we ranked in either S-tier or A-tier in our skills tier list. We recommend that you read our full breakdown of skills there, but to sum it up, some gameplay features are locked behind the first rank of skills, like the hidden-detected bar in Stealth, boosting in Boost Pack Training, and pickpocketing in Thief.

In addition, some skills are universally good for any build. Wellness provides extra health, Weight Lifting for extra weight capacity, and Ballistics for better overall damage for most firearms. Also, Piloting is a great option to pick at the start, since you need to defeat enemy ships to rank the skill up and you’ll face several easy targets as part of the first story mission. At any rate, it’s a good skill to get a head start on since the last two ranks of Piloting unlocks B-class and C-class ships.

We highly suggest that take a look at the all of the backgrounds carefully. This is because there is no way to change backgrounds, not even in new game plus. There’s not even a way to alter it using console commands as far as we know.
