Capcom Files Onimusha Trademark: Is a Sequel or Remaster On its Way?

Capcom has filed a trademark for Onimusha, suggesting that a sequel or remaster of the once-popular series could be on its way. Though there hasn’t been a formal announcement from the company, it registering a trademark for the franchise indicates that it has plans up its sleeve and that it could be reviving a series that has laid dormant since 2006.

The last proper release in the Onimusha series was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which underperformed commercially though received a positive critical reception. The browser game Onimusha Soul was released in 2012, though didn’t get much traction and wasn’t exactly the new entry in the entry in the Onimusha series that fans had been hoping for.

Fast-forward to 2018 and Capcom appears to be in the early stages of revitalizing the franchise, filing trademarks for it on April 3rd that have now been made public. While there is no information available regarding what Capcom plans to do with the Onimusha brand, some have suggested that the company is either looking to release a remastered version of the first game, the 2001 PS2 hit Onimusha: Warlords, or publish an Onimusha mobile game.

It’s impossible to say which direction Capcom is headed in, though the publisher is working on the Resident Evil 2 Remake and recently released the Devil May Cry HD Collection, so it is certainly confident in remastering and remaking its old properties. However, Capcom previously brushed off suggestions to make an Onimusha remake, tweeting:” We want to make lots of games … Unfortunately the development staff is limited.”

Onimusha fans will be hoping that this move by Capcom leads to something more exciting than a mobile game, though we likely won’t hear more about its plans for the series for a while.
