PS4 Sales Exceed 75 Million Units Even as Hardware Sales Begin to Decrease

Sony has revealed its financial earnings report and in doing so, the company has released the latest numbers for its hardware and software sales. It has been confirmed that sales of the PS4 have officially exceeded 75 million units, with over 2.5 million units of that sold in the last quarter.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s latest figures, the Sony PlayStation 4 initially sold 73.6 million units as of December 31st, 2017. In the last quarter which ended as of March 31st, 2018, the console sold an additional 2.5 million units, which brings the total lifetime sales of the PS4 to 76.1 million.

There’s more good news for the company as its Games and Network division managed to earn ¥445 billion in revenue during the last quarter, which is actually an incredible 16.5 percent increase from last year. However, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns as the company also reported a decrease in operating income by 13 percent at ¥19.6 billion.

The reason for those numbers is due to the fact that PS4 sales have actually been declining. Although 2.5 million units sold is still quite a considerable amount, Sony did better in the previous quarter when it managed to sell 2.9 million units. The company’s consolation comes in the form of increased revenue from higher full-game software sales in the last quarter.

The company reported that full-game software sales have increased from 50 million to 52 million in the last quarter. Interestingly, 43 percent of that is from digital sales, which is a 37 percent increase from last year. This means that more PS4 owners are beginning to choose digital copies of games as opposed to physical retail versions.

Additionally, PS Plus subscribers also increased at a growth rate of 23 percent. The service had 26.4 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2017, which grew to a whopping 34.2 million in the same quarter for 2018. For the upcoming fiscal year ending in March 2019, the company is estimating a revenue of ¥1.9 trillion and ¥190 billion in operating income, as well as selling at least 16 million units of the PS4.

In other related news, Sony’s rival Nintendo also revealed its latest financial earnings, as well as the sales of its hardware and software. The Nintendo Switch has sold over 17 million units, with Super Mario Odyssey turning out to be the hybrid console’s best-selling title with more than 10 million copies sold to date.
