We’ve been left playing the waiting game when it comes Rockstar Games‘ upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2. We only received our first look at the official gameplay footage last month. With only one month before release, the developer has finally revealed some Red Dead Redemption 2 story details for the highly-anticipated sequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rockstar San Diego art director Josh Bass and Rockstar North director of art Aaron Garbut revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 players will be seeing the Van Der Linde gang and its leader Dutch van der Linde when they were at their most notorious. However, it will also be when things start falling apart and that’s where the player’s protagonist comes in.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will star Arthur Morgan, one of Dutch van der Linde’s most trusted enforcers in the gang. He was adopted by Dutch and his gang when he was just a little boy, which means that he considers them to be his own family and his primary purpose in life. Bass also mentioned that the game will feature a Wild West that’s different from the one experienced in the first game.
“Things are changing — there’s not much room in a rapidly modernizing world for the gang’s way of life,” he said. “Through Arthur’s eyes, you see events begin to take a toll on the gang as they are forced to flee across America, while at the same time, Dutch’s hold on the gang begins to slip.”
While Rockstar’s most recent game, GTA 5, featured multiple protagonists instead of the usual one, Bass confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 will focus on a single protagonist throughout the entire duration of the game, as well as his relationships with other characters. Speaking of the game’s central characters, we reported yesterday that the developer unveiled character cards for each member of the Van der Linde gang, revealing each of their unique personalities.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will arrive on PS4, Xbox One and PC October 26, 2018.
