EA is Shutting Down Servers for 3 More Games Later This Year

Following its recent trend of removing online support for some of its older titles, it appears that Electronic Arts is shutting down servers for three more classic games later this year. The publisher has been quietly shuttering servers for several older titles in its back catalog over the past year, with both Battlefield: Bad Company games and Battlefield 1943 already set to go offline on December 8.

EA’s Online Services Shutdown list has been updated

As initially spotted by Pure Xbox, EA has updated its Online Services Shutdown list to include three more older titles slated to lose online support this year. Crysis 3 will be the first title to lose online support on September 7, with servers for survival horror hit Dead Space 2 and the classic hack-and-slash Dante’s Inferno set to close down on December 8. GamesIndustry.biz attempted to get clarification from EA on whether the games would still be available for purchase online but has yet to receive a response as of the time of this writing.

While online functionality isn’t necessary to play through any of the games added to the list, the shutdown of EA’s servers for the selected titles means online co-op and competitive multiplayer will no longer be available for those titles. The server shutdowns will affect both PC players and console gamers on multiple generations of hardware, ranging from the PlayStation Portable to the Xbox One.

EA’s recent trend of shutting down online support for games hasn’t just been limited to older titles, either. While it’s somewhat understandable for the publisher to shutter online services for older titles that no longer have an active player base, more recent titles have also been affected by the server shutdowns. Earlier this year EA shut down servers for Apex Legends Mobile, leaving players who’d spent money on the mobile Battle Royale title out of luck as the publisher refused to issue refunds for in-game purchases.
