Most downloaded Switch games in Japan for 2018 include Super Smash Bros ultimate

Most downloaded Switch games in Japan of 2018 revealed by Nintendo

Nintendo has revealed the most downloaded Switch games in Japan for 2018. While the company didn’t produce specific sales numbers, it did offer a ranked list for retail and digital-only games. Each list of 30 games includes games released in 2018 and earlier, so keep that in mind.

Here’s the list of most downloaded retail Switch games, with the games that sold the most featured at the top.

  1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  3. Overcooked 2
  4. Splatoon 2
  5. Super Mario Party
  6. Octopath Traveler
  7. Kirby Star Allies
  8. Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!
  9. Minecraft
  10. Mario Tennis Aces
  11. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  12. Undertale
  13. Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee!

  15. Super Mario Odyssey

  25. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  26. Super Bomberman R
  27. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
  28. Capcom: Belt Action Collection (Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle)
  29. Deemo
  30. Arms

That’s right, Super Smash Bros Ultimate—a game that released on December 7—beat everything else out to become the most downloaded Switch game of 2018 in Japan. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues its sell bonkers, with over 11 million copies sold in total. Indie megahit Overcooked 2 took third place, upsetting Nintendo first-party games like Super Mario Party, Splatoon 2, and Kirby Star Allies.

The download-only list is perhaps more interesting, as it shows just how popular independent and other smaller games are in Japan.

  1. Human Fall Flat
  2. Stardew Valley
  3. Puyo Puyo eSports
  4. Overcooked!
  5. Hollow Knight
  6. Futari de! Nyanko Daisensou
  7. Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros.
  8. Dragon Quest X Basic Pack
  9. Minna de Kuuki Yomi
  10. Wizard of Legend
  11. Dead Cells
  12. Icey
  13. Resident Evil Revelations 2
  14. Snipperclips
  15. Mom Hid My Game!
  16. Golf Story
  17. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst
  18. Detention
  19. Senran Kagura Reflexions
  20. Gorogoa
  21. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
  22. Ultimate Chicken Horse
  23. Guns, Gore & Cannoli
  24. Rockman Classic Collection 2 (Mega Man Legacy Collection 2)
  25. Nine Parchments
  26. Earth Wars
  27. Valkyria Chronicles
  28. The Escapists 2
  29. Ikaruga
  30. Voxel Shot

Up top is No brakes games’ Human Fall Flat, a physics-based puzzler launched in 2017. Stardew Valley is still giving players their charming farming simulator fix, and Puyo Puyo remains ever-popular. The 2D action platformers remain strong in Japan with Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon making it on the list. A number of re-releases also show up with the Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 and Valkyria Chronicles getting on there.

The most downloaded Switch games are missing Fortnite, aren’t they? It’s not because the game isn’t popular in Japan, but because Nintendo only lists games that require an up-front purchase. As Fortnite is free-to-play, it didn’t make the list.
