Today’s Nintendo Switch Direct Mini had a surprise for JRPG fans — there won’t be a Disgaea 6 PS5 release. While every single Disgaea game has debuted on a PlayStation console, Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive for the first time in franchise history.
Disgaea has long had a reputation as a JRPG that pushed the limits and punished players with challenging battles. Most recently, the fourth game in the franchise had its PC port launch on Steam a few weeks earlier than anticipated. It’s been quite a while since a new game was launched in this franchise, and now NIS America has officially revealed Disgaea 6.
The Disgaea franchise was born on Sony systems, starting with Disgaea: Hour of Darkness debuting on the PS2 back in 2003. Since then, every single Disgaea game has launched on a PlayStation console, but the newest release is breaking with tradition for the first time in nearly 20 years: there won’t be a Disgaea 6 PS5 edition.
“Get ready for an experience that defies common sense, genre, and destiny. Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch Summer 2021,” reads its official description.
Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is pushing the RPG genre further with even more ridiculous changes to the combat system. Character levels now max out at 99,999,999 and maximum damage can hit numbers well into the quadrillions. As always, the game has a devilish protagonist and a cast of assorted adorable characters to assist them.
The surprise reveal of this newest NIS America title was a great surprise for Nintendo Switch gamers, but that’s not all — Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will soon be able to enjoy a game trial for Disgaea 5 as a special limited-time event. The Disgaea 5 Nintendo Switch game trial will last from September 24, 2020, at 1:00 PM EDT until September 30, 2020, at 2:59 AM EDT, so you have plenty of time to buy or renew a Nintendo Switch Online membership before then.
The lack of a Disgaea 6 PS5 release will likely be disappointing to longtime PlayStation gamers, especially after the disastrous pre-order situation that developed following yesterday’s Sony presentation. If you’re lucky enough to already own a Switch, you can get hyped for Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny by checking out its official website. This new JRPG will launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch in Summer 2021.
