Retro Ad Replay – Halo 3’s 12th Anniversary

It’s yet again time for another Retro Ad Replay! This is the series where we take a trip back in time in order to reminisce and celebrate the anniversary of the biggest moments in gaming. If you find yourself wanting more content like this, be sure to visit Mandatory.com.

In this, our September 25 edition, we’ll be traveling back 12 years to September 25, 2007. This is the day that Halo 3 launched for Xbox 360.

Developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios, Halo 3 was the hotly-anticipated sequel to the original Xbox’s Halo 2, bringing the series to the next-generation console. This meant enhanced performance, as well as a number of gameplay features that weren’t previously available. Forge mode, which allowed players to create their own competitive multiplayer and challenge maps, was a key new addition.

The Halo 3 E3 2007 trailer focused on showcasing actual gameplay from the campaign, both from a co-op and single-player perspective. You can watch it below:

While the original Halo 3 launched in 2007, the game has been given the remaster treatment in the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which packs Halo: Combat EvolvedHalo 2: AnniversaryHalo 3Halo 4, and the Halo: Nightfall digital series together for Xbox One (and soon PC) owners to play. The game also got a spin-off in the form of Halo 3: ODST, which launched in 2009. This provided more context for the events that went down in Halo 3.

In the GameRevolution review, which was posted on September 27, 2007, reviewer JP Hurh praised the game for: being “as good as Halo 2,” its visual presentation, the multiplayer tweaks and balances, and also the Forge and Theatre modes. It received an impressive 4.5 score.

But still, we applaud you, for in giving us more of the same, you have given us exactly what we wanted. And, lo, the tiny flower of criticism we mention we have already smashed . . . with a Gravity Hammer.

Join us again next week, when we’ll be getting nostalgic about another classic of the past in Retro Ad Replay.
