We’ve all been hoodwinked at some point in our lives. We may think we’re too smart to have the wool pulled over our eyes, but let’s face it; we’re all idiots. Idiots with idiot brains who can easily be conned by idiot smoke and mirror tricks. But now it’s time to lighten that load and share with us one of the times in which you were “had.”
In today’s Tell GR, we want to know which misleading trailer sold you on a disappointing game. In an age when “cinematic trailers” continue to be all the rage, many have been released that show a completely different game to the one we received at release. Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “Like many, I was all-in on No Man’s Sky ahead of launch. It always seemed preposterously ambitious, so I was prepared for it to not live up to some of Sean Murray’s more outlandish claims, but the end result was a far cry from what we had been promised. Considering there was apparently going to be so much to do, I wasn’t expecting to be so bored meandering through its desolate planets. It’s had a major comeback since then, but it’s still far too focused on crafting to appeal to me.”
Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “No Man’s Sky‘s pre-release footage was a real bait and switch. While the game has been updated to be quite good at this point, the original release didn’t come close to the fidelity shown in the trailers. This was especially obnoxious as Sean Murray showed off “gameplay” that turned out to be pre-baked. It was a let down for a lot of people that purchased the game, but at least Hello Games has stuck with it and produced what is a really good space exploration game. It’s just disappointing it took almost three years to get to that point.”
Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “Aliens: Colonial Marines. What an absolute con that was. The game looked incredible in the trailer, ready to satisfy Aliens fans, but then it launched in a right state.”
Michael Leri, features editor: “While Mack has the right answer, Brutal Legend‘s early footage didn’t quite sell it as the RTS game it really was. It was still an original story in a creative universe but those strategy aspects weren’t quite what I was expecting nor was it what I wanted.”

“I used to re-create a !@#% annoying primary school kid in Create-A-Wrestler in WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain and kick his ass so bad in a brutal 2v1 handicap TLC match with a friend of mine. We’d attack him untl his stamina was as empty as could be, but instead of pinning the guy down we went looking for extra weapons to humiliate him even more. Also, the same guy featured in the Tony Hawk Create-A-Skater series, only equipped with ‘The Jackass’ combined with persistent bad landings with the extra blood cheatcode on.
