Marvel MMORPG Canceled

Marvel MMORPG Canceled at DC Universe Online Developer Daybreak Games

Daybreak Games was in the process of developing an MMORPG based on the Marvel Universe. I say “was” because parent company EnadGlobal7 has announced they’ve canceled the game as it is considered too risky for the size of investment needed to continue. That investment will now be used on other projects.

Why was the Marvel MMORPG canceled?

Marvel's Avengers

Developer Daybreak Games has pedigree within the MMORPG universe, being responsible for games like DC Universe Online, PlanetSide 2, and Everquest II. Despite this, the unnamed Marvel MMORPG has been canceled and the money originally due to be invested in the project will now be spent on a variety of other projects elsewhere. As spotted by ResetEra, EnadGlobal7’s statement said:

“EG7 today announced it will be discontinuing the development of the Marvel project at Daybreak Games. Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects. The company had planned to invest more than SEK 500 million in the Marvel project over the next three years. The company will now diversify this investment across multiple, smaller size projects within the group, including the previously announced major upgrades to The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online, and new game opportunities with our first party, original IPs. Along with this reallocation, the company expects a write down of approximately SEK 230 million in project related assets in Q2 2022. As one of the long-term investments, the change to the Marvel project plan will not impact near to medium term revenues and profits other than the balance sheet and P&L impact related to the write-down”.

No further details were given on the major upgrades being given to The Lord of the Rings Online or DC Universe Online, or the new games based on their own unlicensed IPs. As soon as we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know.

In other news, a familiar face has returned in the brand new Destiny 2 Season of the Haunted. Elsewhere, Microsoft reportedly turned down an exclusivity deal for Star Wars: KOTOR Remake on Xbox.
