Fortnite Lag: How to Fix Fortnite 5.40 Performance Issues

The Fortnite 5.40 update has dropped and, while it comes with its fair share of goodies, there’s always a stick in the mud to stop us in our tracks. Case in point: the Fortnite lag problem has gotten considerably worse, at least according to anecdotal evidence across social media and Reddit. But is there a Fortnite 5.40 performance issues fix? Let’s see if we can make the best out of a bad situation.

Fortnite Lag: What are the Fortnite 5.40 Performance Issues?

The Epic Games forum is currently seeing threads such as this one, wherein players are complaining about slowdown and lag across multiple platforms, including both PC and mobile. Another post refers to “ping spikes” which would indicate that it’s likely to be a server problem rather than anything to do with frame rates on a game engine basis (though, of course, they, too are affected by lag).

First up, Epic Games is currently addressing Fortnite mobile lag on iOS, though many who play on either platforms will feel aggried by the lack of official response from the developer.

That being said, there are a handful of catch-all fixes you can do to ensure a slightly smoother experience while we wait for a (potential) hotfix.

Connecting your console, or PC, to your internet router via ethernet cable, if possible, may alleviate some of the more painful lag spikes, though it isn’t a guarantee.

On PC, check all of your drivers are updated by going to the control panel, heading to “Hardware and Sound”, clicking through to “Device Drivers” and then on to “Update Driver Software.” If they’re not up to date anyway, it’s going to be a godsend to get that sorted now while you still can.

For now, though, our best option is to leave it to the powers that be. Epic Games may release a Fortnite hotfix across the next few days so cross your fingers and toes for a quick solution.
