What If? Episode 7: Is Natalie Portman the Jane Foster voice actor?

The latest episode of Marvel’s What If? is here, retelling the events of 2011’s Thor with a more jovial atmosphere. In this installment, the God of Thunder isn’t a brooding, rebellious young prince, but instead a party-obsessed rebel, using Earth as his latest site for increasingly wild antics. As a spin on the first Thor movie, Jane Foster returns, too – the young scientist who falls in love with Thor, despite their differences. In the MCU, she’s played by Natalie Portman – but does she return here? We dig into whether Natalie Portman is the Jane Foster voice actor.

Yes, if you recognize Jane Foster’s voice, there’s good reason. Natalie Portman returns once more to reprise her role, voicing Jane throughout the episode.

Hers is a large role, too, as Jane plays a crucial part in helping Thor tame his party antics. Of course, she’s accompanied by her trusty sidekick Darcy, who last appeared in WandaVision. Jane once more locates Thor’s arrival following a spike in her scientific readings and spends the episode trying to resolve the problems caused by his rampant partying.

It’s interesting to see Natalie Portman return. There was a long period where her absence from the MCU was hugely apparent. Following the release of Thor: The Dark World in 2013, Portman distanced herself from the franchise, with rumors swirling that she was unhappy with the sequel, and wanted no more to do with Marvel. This all changed six years later, when deleted footage from The Dark World was used to insert Jane into Avengers: Endgame. Later that summer, it was confirmed that she’d be back in next year’s Thor: Love and Thunder – taking on the mantle of Lady Thor.

As such, it’s good to see Natalie Portman return here. It marks her full comeback after years of tense relations with the MCU. It’s a return worthy of a Norse God.
