Baldur's Gate 3 Soul Coin Coins BG3 Keep Sell Karlach Infernal Engine

Baldur’s Gate 3 Soul Coin: Should You Keep Coins or Use Them on Karlach’s Infernal Engine?

The Baldur’s Gate 3 soul coin is a mysterious item that sells for a quite a lot of money, but can also be used as a consumable. Most soul coins are found as loot throughout the game, with the first few you find likely being those in the Dank Crypt. At the same time, soul coins can be used to fuel Karlach’s infernal engine, which provides a temporary buff for her and her only. So it’s understandable if you’re wondering whether to keep soul coins for trade or to use them as infernal engine. Here’s our recommendation on what to do with soul coins in BG3.

Should you sell or use the Baldur’s Gate 3 soul coin?

Soul coins are better off being sold, especially if you’re strapped for money near the beginning of the game.

If you put a soul coin into Karlach’s inventory, you can right-click on it to give her a temporary boon called Infernal Fury. This makes her weapon attacks and unarmed strikes deal an additional 1-4 fire damage while she’s raging or if her health pool is at 25% or lower. This is a fairly strong boon at the start of the game when enemies have a low amount of HP.

However, by the midgame when enemies are about level 5 or higher, this buff isn’t all the significant. It’s better to focus on other spells for buffs or getting better armor and weapons that deal more damage. Also, the base value of the soul coin is 100 gold pieces, which is nothing to scoff at when you’re still in Act 1.

There may come a time in, say, a future expansion when the party might have to venture to Avernus, where devils frequently trade in soul coins. But until that happens, you might as well sell the soul coins.

BG3 Soul Coin FAQ

Q: What do soul coins do in Baldur’s Gate 3?

A: Soul coins are a valuable item that can be sold for a significant amount of money or used as a consumable to fuel Karlach’s infernal engine, granting her a temporary buff.

Q: How does the Infernal Fury boon work?

A: When a soul coin is placed in Karlach’s inventory and activated, it grants her the Infernal Fury boon. This results in her weapon attacks and unarmed strikes dealing an additional 1-4 fire damage, but only when she’s in a rage or when her health is at 25% or below. This boon is particularly potent early in the game when foes have lesser HP.

Q: Should players sell the soul coin or use it for the buff in the early stages of the game?

A: While the Infernal Fury boon is useful early on, by midgame its impact diminishes. Considering the coin’s base value of 100 gold pieces, especially in Act 1, it’s recommended to sell soul coins unless there’s a specific strategy involving Karlach’s buff in play.
