Most soul coins are found as loot throughout the game, with the first few you find likely being those in the Dank Crypt. At the same time, soul coins can be used to fuel Karlach’s infernal engine, which provides a temporary buff for her and her only. Should you sell or use the Baldur’s Gate 3 soul coin?
Soul coins are better off being sold, especially if you’re strapped for money near the beginning of the game.
If you put a soul coin into Karlach’s inventory, you can right-click on it to give her a temporary boon called Infernal Fury. This makes her weapon attacks and unarmed strikes deal an additional 1-4 fire damage while she’s raging or if her health pool is at 25% or lower. This is a fairly strong boon at the start of the game when enemies have a low amount of HP.
However, by the midgame when enemies are about level 5 or higher, this buff isn’t all the significant. It’s better to focus on other spells for buffs or getting better armor and weapons that deal more damage. Also, the base value of the soul coin is 100 gold pieces, which is nothing to scoff at when you’re still in Act 1.
There may come a time in, say, a future expansion when the party might have to venture to Avernus, where devils frequently trade in soul coins. But until that happens, you might as well sell the soul coins.
