Sega Game Gear Sells One New Game in 2018 (So Far)

Forget your console wars. It appears someone is still holding a candle for Sega’s domination of the home console market. So much so that they’ve bought a brand-new game for the Sega Game Gear, bringing the amount of games sold for the console in the Year of Our Lord 2018 to a thoroughly-impressive one. Count ‘em: One.

Polygon reports that a brand-new retail copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was sold in March in the U.S.

According to video game sales analyst Mat Piscaletta it is confirmed as a “legit retail purchase” and it is believed that the mystery customer who purchased the copy has been found. Rejoice!

Apparently being sold at a Half Price Books store in Wisconsin, Twitter user MihaelMELLO_K’s brother-in-law bought Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for $6.99 and, may God have mercy on our souls, opened it. That’s a collector killer, right there, even if it is the steal of the century.

While retro consoles are still being supported – including the Game Boy seeing a new 2016 release by the name of Infinity – it’s a real rarity to see any backroom inventory from over two decades ago get shifted.

I have so many questions, though: What did they want with, let’s face it, the inferior version of a classic? Was it just lying around? My best guess is that it’s someone who’s caught the retro bug or a collector who just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Either way, Piscaletta managed to stumble across them on social media. The rest of the mystery, however, may never get a satisfactory explanation, like UFOs or the Cleveland Browns.
