A major Batman character has come out as bisexual

The Gotham Knights Robin, one of the upcoming stars of next year’s eagerly-anticipated game, has been revealed as bisexual in the latest Batman comic out today — specifically, Batman: Urban Legends #6 for August 10. While the status of Batman’s Tim Drake as gay or bisexual has been hinted at in this series for a while, DC Comics seem to have finally confirmed this particular Robin as bi at last.

Third Robin Tim Drake has finally been confirmed as bisexual in today’s Batman: Urban Legends #6, by writer Meghan Fitzmartin and artist Belén Ortega. While the character has been shown dating women before, such as fellow Gotham city hero Stephanie Brown — Spoilers: who made her live-action debut in Batwoman Season 2 earlier this year — so Drake is not gay, but this issue does confirm he is bisexual. He clearly has feelings for a friend of his, Bernard, and by the end of the issue agrees to go on a date with him.

The reaction from fans on Twitter has been extremely positive, with several pointing out that the idea of Batman or Robin as gay or bisexual has been seen as a negative stereotype or a joke since the ’60s, so this is a positive development.

Tim Drake recently became Robin again after Bruce Wayne’s son Damian quit the role, and originally became the third Robin back in 1989 after Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. He came to the forefront during the epic Knightfall saga and became the second Robin in the beloved Batman: The Animated Series. Drake is the main Robin in the Batman: Arkham series of games, and will be Robin in next year’s Gotham Knights. Tim Drake will finally make his live-action debut, played by actor Jay Lycurgo, in the HBO Max series Titans Season 3 coming this month.
