House of the Dragon: How Many Dragons Are There?

Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon continues to impress millions of people around the world, thanks to its well-paced storytelling and impressive roster of characters. As many predicted however, the titular beasts steal the spotlight whenever they make an appearance on screen. So far, we’ve seen a number of the creatures under House Targaryen control across this series and Game of Thrones, but how many dragons exist in the House of the Dragon timeline?

It’s the question on everybody’s lips, and thankfully co-showrunner Miguel Saphochnik has the answer. Speaking to Empire, he confirmed that House of the Dragon season 1 will feature nine of House Targaryen’s 17 dragons. It’s a lot to keep track of, especially for Game of Thrones fans who were used to remembering the names of just three that were born under the watchful eye of Daenerys Targaryen.

One of the most prominent in this new series is large yellow dragon Syrax, ridden by current heir to the Iron Throne, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Then there’s the red-scaled dragon Caraxes, also known as the Blood Wyrm. He is most loyal to the disgraced Prince Daemon Targaryen and appeared threatening to those loyal to King Viserys Targaryen, when they approached Dragonstone.

While we’ve not seen any of the other seven dragons set to feature in House of the Dragon season 1 just yet, one of them could be about to hatch. Audiences watched as Daemon tossed back a stolen egg, originally meant for the late Prince Baelon, born of the blue dragon Dreamfyre. This is likely going to be the gold dragon Sunfyre, and those who have read Fire and Blood will know that his bond with a future rider is an especially important one.

Others that could be expected to appear throughout the season are Meleys, the red and pink she-dragon ridden by Rhaenys Targaryen, with bronze beasts Vhagar and Vermithor, silver-gray dragon Seasmoke, and dark blue Tessarion also in the mix.

House of the Dragon continues Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.

In other news, find out if you need to watch Lord of the Rings before The Rings of Power, and learn more about the House of the Dragon villain the Crabfeeder, Craghas Drahar.
