The Sonic 2 Knuckles voice actor for the upcoming Sonic movie sequel has been revealed, and it’s a familiar name for anyone enjoying The Suicide Squad or even playing Fortnite this week. So who is voicing Knuckles in Sonic movie 2? None other than Idris Elba, who plays Bloodsport/Robert DuBois in The Suicide Squad and Heimdall in Marvel’s Thor and Avengers movies — and not fellow comic book actor Jason Momoa, as first rumored.

The actor playing Knuckles the Echidna in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie is none other than Idris Elba. Elba himself took to Twitter to announce the news in a subtle post with a picture of Knuckles’ gloved fist, with his casting being confirmed by replies from the likes of the Sonic movie Twitter and even Sonic’s movie voice actor Ben Schwartz — despite the best attempts of parody gaming account @harddrivemag.

The news may surprise some, given that it was strongly rumored earlier this that fellow DC Comics movie actor Jason Momoa would be playing Knuckles, who is currently filming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Obviously, this has now been proven false, and the fan response to the casting of Elba as Knuckles has been extremely positive, with many praising the casting of a black actor in the role.

The Sonic movie sequel is currently filming for a release date of April next year, with a special prequel comic set between the two movies arriving around the same time. Knuckles was confirmed for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 after a model was spotted on set earlier this year, although fans are still waiting on the first trailer to see the character in action. As for Sonic gaming news, there’s a new Sonic game that’s also due out next year and will likely be called Sonic Rangers, and Sonic Colors: Ultimate will be out next month.
