Modern Warfare patch notes contain internal developer messaging about loud footsteps

In what can probably be best described as an unfortunate mistake, the developers at Infinity Ward (or possibly one of the other Call of Duty support studios) left in a few internal comments with their latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare patch notes. While they’ve already been scrubbed from where they were found on Battle.net as of this writing, the internet never forgets. Taking a look at what was included, we see that leaks like this provide a unique insight into the patching process.

Two notes were left in on Battle.net, one positive and one less so. The update that everyone can get behind involves the addition of Gun Game, a fan-favorite multiplayer mode. As seen in the note (preserved in a screenshot over on CharlieIntel), the developers agree with that sentiment.

“Gun Game is a fan favourite mode and we should see positive sentiment around its addition.”

The second note revolves around how much noise footsteps make in multiplayer matches. While this patch did adjust some sounds surrounding movement, it seems that the developers are aware that it won’t be enough to satisfy everyone.

“This is a hot topic in the community, and this is not the change that they were hoping to see. Our core players want to see footstep volume dramatically reduced.”

Patching a game is always a delicate balance and these internal notes show that developers are often all too aware of how a potential change may affect the community around their creations. If you’re one of those players bummed out by the loud footsteps around every corner, there are certainly ways to fix the audio mix on your end. Even so, perhaps this small breach will inspire the developer to talk more openly about why they’re making said changes even if they know it’s not what their players want.
